Intent

The music curriculum at Paisley aims to provide pupils with opportunities to listen and appraise a wide range of historical periods, genres and styles of music, sing and perform and create their own music through an understanding of rhythm, pitch and tone. It is taught through three interrelated pillars: Technical, Constructive and Expressive.

These pillars then are supported by five Key Concepts, namely : Singing; Listening; Composing; Performing and musicianship. These Key Concepts are then further supported by Second Order Concepts which permeate and link the whole curriculum within school, this making the learning journey more relevant and cohesive for the learner.

Implementation

The majority of the curriculum is supported by the resource ‘Charanga’, which provides a broad overview of the history of music as well as opportunities to sing, perform, compose and improvise their own arrangements. Alongside this, children across the school have the opportunity to sing, perform, compose and improvise music linked to events and celebrations. In Year 4, all pupils have the opportunity to participate in the ‘Wider Opportunities’ program, delivered by the Hull Music Service, where all pupils learn to play a percussion instrument.

Impact

  • Higher standards and outcomes
  • Quality performances to parents and the wider community
  • Higher engagement through enrichment opportunities and inspiration from real-life musicians in a wide range of musical genres through the Charanga programme.

By the End of Key Stage 2 it is expected that children will be able to:

  1. Play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices and playing musical instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression
  2. Improvise and compose music for a range of purposes using the inter-related dimensions of music
  3. Listen with attention to detail and recall sounds with increasing aural memory
  4. Use and understand staff and other musical notations
  5. Appreciate and understand a wide range of high-quality live and recorded music drawn from different traditions and from great composers and musicians
  6. Develop an understanding of the history of music.
